ARW is the RAW format of Sony Alpha cameras. To deliver ARW shoots as JPG on the same day, convert the whole card in one batch with the camera's white balance and a fixed output size, and save the careful edits for later. Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop can develop ARW files, and reaConverter, a Windows batch converter from ReaSoft Development that handles 800+ formats, can convert ARW to JPG in bulk, producing a full-size and a web-size copy in a single pass.
reaConverter reads every Sony RAW file type, including Lossless Compressed in M and S sizes. Other programs vary, so before a big job, run a few test frames in your chosen RAW file type through every tool in your chain.
What is ARW, and what do Sony's RAW modes mean?
ARW stands for Alpha RAW. Every Sony interchangeable-lens camera, from older NEX bodies to the current Alpha lineup, records RAW in this format, and many Cyber-shot compacts use it too. The extension stays the same, but the content inside changes with the RAW File Type you pick in the camera menu.
Sony's own figures give a sense of the trade-off. For a high-resolution full-frame body, one frame weighs about 100 MB uncompressed, 62 MB lossless compressed, and 52 MB compressed. An APS-C body comes in around 43, 30, and 22 MB.
RAW File Type | Image data | Size | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
Uncompressed | Every bit the sensor recorded | Largest | Maximum compatibility with older software |
Lossless Comp (L) | Identical to uncompressed, packed tighter | Much smaller | The best default on bodies that offer it |
Lossless Comp (M) / (S) | Reduced resolution, lossless at that size | Smaller still | Events where 61 megapixels is overkill |
Compressed | Lossy, about half the uncompressed size | Small | High-volume shooting where file size matters most |
The catch is compatibility. Uncompressed and compressed ARW have been around for many years and open almost anywhere. Lossless compressed files, and especially the M and S sizes, need recent versions of RAW software, so an older editor may refuse them. reaConverter reads all four types.
What does a same-day ARW delivery workflow look like?
Event, real estate, and corporate photographers face the same deadline: the client wants usable images tonight, and the polished edit can wait. Splitting the job into two passes keeps both promises.
Cull on import. Copy the card, then delete obvious misses before converting anything. Converting files you will throw away wastes the most time.
Convert in one batch. Develop every keeper with the camera's white balance and a consistent brightness setting. No per-image tweaking.
Make two sizes at once. A full-resolution JPG for the client's archive, and a smaller copy sized for listing portals, newsletters, or social media.
Deliver. Upload the JPG folders to the client gallery the same evening.
Edit later. Hero shots get a proper pass in Lightroom, Capture One, or Imaging Edge in the following days, and replace the quick versions.
The first pass works because modern Sony bodies get exposure and white balance right most of the time. Steps 2 and 3 are pure batch work, which is exactly where a converter beats an editor.
Which tools convert ARW files in batch?
Tool | Cost | Batch | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Sony Imaging Edge Desktop | Free | Yes | Sony's own color rendering and camera settings | Sony cameras only, so mixed-brand folders need another tool |
Windows Photos + Raw Image Extension | Free | No | Thumbnails and quick viewing | Viewing only |
darktable / RawTherapee | Free, open source | Yes | Full control over the look | Learning curve; check support for lossless compressed files from your body |
Adobe Lightroom Classic | Subscription | Yes | Culling, editing, and export presets in one place | Requires importing into a catalog first |
Capture One | Subscription or license | Yes | Strong color and tethering for Sony shooters | Price |
reaConverter | Paid, free trial | Yes, plus Watch Folders and command line | Fast bulk conversion with several outputs per run; reads every RAW file type, including Lossless M and S | Basic RAW controls, not an editor |
Online converters appear high in search results, but uploading a 60 MB ARW file at a time is slow, and client photos then sit on someone else's server. For anything beyond a single file, a desktop tool is faster and safer.
How to batch convert ARW to JPG in reaConverter
reaConverter converts ARW files straight from a folder, with no import or catalog, and runs entirely offline on Windows 10 or 11.
Load the keepers. Drag the culled folder into the main window.
Set RAW loading. Open Menu → Loading settings → RAW formats loading settings and choose the camera's white balance. Leave denoise off for well-lit events; it slows the batch and softens detail.
Choose JPG. Quality 90 to 92 is a good balance for client delivery.
Add a resize if needed. The editing actions can cap the long edge for web copies.
Convert. Click Convert and check a handful of frames before uploading.
The command line does both delivery sizes in one run. This produces full-resolution JPGs for the client plus 2,048-pixel web copies that fit inside a square box, so portrait and landscape frames both come out right:
cons_rcp.exe -source_folder "D:\Event\Keepers\" -source_ext arw -dest_path "D:\Event\Full\" -dest_ext jpg -jpg_quality 92 -raw_white_balance 3 -copy_exif 1 -create_thumbnails 1 -thumbnails_folder "D:\Event\Web\" -thumbnails_width 2048 -thumbnails_height 2048 -thumbnails_resize_type 4 -thumbnails_ext jpg -thumbnails_jpg_quality 85
For shoots where you ingest on a laptop, a Watch Folder can do this automatically: copy the keepers into a local folder and the JPGs appear while you pack up. The command line and Watch Folders need reaConverter Pro.
Honest limitations
Check your RAW File Type first. reaConverter reads all of Sony's RAW file types, including Lossless Comp M and S, but editors and culling apps vary. Before a paid job, confirm every tool in your chain opens your exact setting.
Sony color is Sony's. Imaging Edge reproduces the camera's Creative Looks and picture profiles. Third-party converters, reaConverter among them, interpret the RAW data their own way, so skin tones can differ slightly.
No culling. reaConverter converts what you give it. Picking the keepers happens before, in a viewer or culling app.
Basic development only. White balance, brightness, denoise, and automatic color correction are available; masks, lens profiles, and local edits are not.
Windows only, automation in Pro. reaConverter runs on Windows 10 and 11, and the command line and Watch Folders require the Pro edition.
FAQ
How do I convert ARW to JPG for free? Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop is free and handles batches from Sony cameras. darktable and RawTherapee are free open-source alternatives with export queues.
Why won't my ARW files open in my editor? The most common cause is a newer camera or a lossless compressed RAW file type that an older version of the software does not recognize. Update the program, or shoot a test frame in Uncompressed to confirm.
Should I shoot Uncompressed, Lossless, or Compressed RAW on a Sony? Lossless Comp (L) keeps all the data at a much smaller size, so it is the usual choice when your software supports it. Compressed saves more space but discards some information. Uncompressed is the safest for compatibility.
Can I shoot ARW and JPEG at the same time? Yes. RAW plus JPEG gives you instant files from the camera, but they follow the camera's in-body processing and double the card usage.
What is the best JPG size for real estate listings? Requirements vary by por
